USPS Tracking Statuses Explained
When you track a USPS package, you will see one of the following delivery statuses. Each status indicates a different stage in the shipping process.
Info Received
The shipping label has been created and USPS has received the shipment information. The package has not yet been picked up.
In Transit
Your package is on its way. It is moving through the USPS network and may pass through multiple sorting facilities.
Out for Delivery
Your package has arrived at the local delivery facility and is on the delivery vehicle. It will be delivered today.
Delivered
Your package has been successfully delivered to the destination address.
Exception
An unexpected issue has occurred during delivery. This could include a failed attempt, customs hold, or incorrect address.
Expired
Tracking information is no longer available. This typically happens after 30 to 120 days.
Common USPS Tracking Problems
Having trouble with your USPS tracking? Here are the most common issues and how to resolve them.
Tracking says 'Pre-Shipment' for days
This means USPS has received the electronic shipping info but hasn't physically scanned the package yet. The sender may not have dropped it off, or it's awaiting the first scan.
'In Transit, Arriving Late'
The package is delayed. USPS will continue attempting delivery. This often resolves within 1-3 additional business days. If no update after 7 days, file a missing mail search.
Delivered to wrong address
Contact your local post office immediately. You can also file a claim at usps.com. For Priority Mail and Express, insurance coverage is included.
No tracking updates for international mail
International First-Class mail has limited tracking. Updates may stop once the package leaves the US until it arrives at the destination country's postal system.
USPS International Shipping & Customs
International packages require customs declaration forms (PS Form 2976 or 2976-A). Duties and taxes are determined by the destination country. USPS does not collect duties; the recipient pays upon delivery. Items valued under thresholds set by destination countries may be exempt.
Shipping Restrictions
USPS prohibits shipping of hazardous materials, firearms, ammunition, live animals (with limited exceptions for certain insects and small cold-blooded animals), and perishable items unless properly packaged. International restrictions vary by destination country.
About USPS
USPS is an independent agency of the United States federal government responsible for providing postal service throughout the country. USPS delivers to over 163 million addresses in the US and offers international mail and package services to over 190 countries. It is the largest postal service in the world by volume.
